2014 City of Leeds Grade 2 Meet

Eleven swimmers from the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club competed in the City of Leeds SC October Level 2 short course Meet held at the John Charles Centre for Sport on 25 and 26th October 2014.

Reaching the start list was an achievement in itself as the meet was over-subscribed and over 1,200 swims were rejected.

The swimmers again demonstrated their continuing improvement and achieved a further 23 personal best times.

The 9 and 10 year old swimmers were awarded medals on a heat declared basis whilst the 11 year and upward swimmers swam in heats with the top ten in age categories 11/12, 13/14 and 15 and over swimming again in the finals.

Alexander Tikhonov (9 years) won gold medals in the 200m breaststroke and 200m IM and a silver medal in the 100m backstroke. Georgia Lee (9 years) also won bronze medal in 50m breaststroke.

In the 13/14 age group Libby Turner (13) reached the finals of the 100m backstroke finishing 5th, the 200m IM finishing 7th, and the final of the 200m breaststroke.

In the 15 and over category Thomas Speed reached the final of the 50m breaststroke finishing 9th. At 15 he was by far the youngest in a final that was dominated by swimmers from Loughborough University.

Libby Turner 50m back, 100m back

Phoebe McNicholas 200m breast

This was an extremely tough meet and the sessions were long with swimmers racing up to 7pm in the evening.  The swimmers, although tired showed so much determination at this high level meet and swam exceptionally.

Carly Herbert recognised by the England Talent Development Programme

ASA England Programmes Education and Development Days (EPEDD) 2014

England Programmes National Coach Development Workshops 2014-2015

Many congratulations to our Head Coach Carly Herbert who has been invited by the England Talent Development Programme to be a programme coach on Libby Turner's ASA England Programmes Education and Development Days (EPEDD) 2014 being held on Sunday 2 November 2014. Carly will work under The England Programmes Officer and a Lead Skills Coach. The invitation has been received in recognition of the tremendous work that Carly has carried out on behalf of our club and our swimmers.

In addition Carly has also been selected to take part in the England Programmes National Coach Workshops 2014/2015. These workshops will take place on 16 November and 20 December 2014 and 11 January 2015 at both Loughborough and Millfield School. Only fifteen coaches were successful in being selected from the whole of England and again this is testimony to Carly's work and the success of our swimmers in the pool.

Yorkshire Winter Competition 11 and 12 October 2014

In a terrific weekend of competition 35 swimmers took part in the Yorkshire Winter Competition 2014 (short course) held at Ponds Forge Sheffield on 11 and 12 October 2014.

The swimmers achieved a memorable 77 personal best times from 102 swims which underlines the constant improvements that are being made through dedication to training.

In addition the team collected 9 medals and 15 other top ten places.

The medalists were:

9 year Boys: Alex Tikhonov Gold 50m freestyle, Gold 50m breaststroke, Gold100m IM, Silver 50m butterfly.

10 year old girls: Abigail Miles Gold 100m breaststroke, Silver 100m backstroke, Silver 200m IM

13 year old girls: Libby Turner Silver 100m backstroke, Bronze 200m IM

Other places were:

9 year old girls: Macy Yoxall 7th 50m freestyle, 10th 100m IM.

9 year old boys: Myles Tupman 4th 50m breaststroke; Alexander Tikhonov 7th 50m backstroke.

10 year old girls: Abigail Miles 4th 100m butterfly, 9th 100m freestyle.

10 year old boys: Lewis Baker 7th 50m freestyle, 5th 50m breaststroke, 8th 50m backstroke, 9th 50m butterfly , 6th 100m IM.

13 year old girls Libby Turner 6th 100m freestyle, 8th 100m breaststroke, 7th 100m butterfly.

15 years and above boys/men Thomas Speed 7th 100m breaststroke.

The rest of the team was made up of Maea Hamby, Georgia Lee, Macy Yoxall, Curtis Harper, Neve Wilkie, Isabelle Speed, Phoebe McNicholas, Harriet Ostrowski-Jones, Jessica Richardson, Sam Charlesworth, Matthew Selous, Ella Waller , Elizabeth Safonkina, Georgia Hamblett, Megan Mitchel, Millie Hamby, Megan Lee, Lucy Hatfield, Greg Lugton, Nathan Billingham, Claire Berry, Holly Milnes, Lauren Heywood, Mollie James, Reece Tate, Steve Dallamore, Ben Nutt and Elliot Robinson.

This has been a fantastic start to the 2014/15 season and spirits are high.  These are the best results we have ever had from a Yorkshire Championships and hopefully this is the beginning of a great season for the Borough of Barnsley swimmers!

Robin Hood Open Level 1 Long Course Meet 4 and 5 October 2014

In yet another exciting weekend 13 Swimmers from Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club took part in the Level 1 Robin Hood Open Long Course Meet held at Ponds Forge Sheffield on 4 and 5 October 2014 securing 32 long course personal best times. Level 1 meets provide much stronger opposition and the Robin Hood meet drew in teams from as far as Wales, St Ives and Peterborough.

Pride of place again went to Abigail Miles, Lewis Baker and Libby Turner with support from Thomas Speed who were awarded the following medals:

10 years Abigail Miles

Gold 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, 200m IM.

Silver 100m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 200m butterfly

10 Years Lewis Baker

Gold 200m freestyle.

Silver 100m breaststroke.

Bronze 200m breaststroke, 200m IM.

Lewis also secured 4th place and alas no medals in 400m freestyle, 50m freestyle and 200m backstroke.

13 Years Libby Turner

Gold 50m freestyle.

Silver 50m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke.

Bronze 100m backstroke, 200m butterfly.

15 Years Thomas Speed

Gold 50m breaststroke.

Bronze 100m backstroke.

Other swimmers taking part and contributing significantly to the total of personal best times were Jessica Richardson, Harriet Ostrowski-Jones, Megan Lee, Megan Mitchel, Holly Milnes, Nathan Billingham, Greg Lugton, Ben Nutt and Reece Tate.

Matlock and District Open Short Course Meet 27 September 2014

It was another very successful weekend as 14 swimmers from the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club took part in the Level 3 Matlock and District Open Short Course Meet held at Arc Leisure in Matlock on the 27 September and secured 31 personal best short course times.

The following were awarded medals:

9 Years Georgia Lee

Bronze 50m breaststroke

10 Years Abigail Miles:

Gold 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 200m IM

10 Years Lewis Baker

Gold 200m freestyle, 200m IM;

Silver 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly;

Bronze 50m freestyle.

11 years Jessica Richardson

Silver 100m butterfly.

11 Years Sam Charlesworth

Silver 50m breaststroke;

Bronze 100m breaststroke.

13 years Libby Turner

Gold 100m backstroke and 200m IM

Silver 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

Bronze 50m breaststroke

In addition Libby Turner also won the £50 first prize in the girls medley skins competition. The skins competition features only the top IM swimmers and is a 7 race knock out eliminator swam at 2 minute intervals over 50m with the officials varying the stroke for each race.

Other swimmers taking part at Matlock and contributing significantly to the total of personal best times were Maea Hamby, Millie Hamby, Freya Waller, Ella Waller, Megan Lee, Lucy Greatorex, Myles Tupman and Matthew Selous.

From all of the Borough of Barnsley team a very big well done to everyone who took part at the meet and a huge thank you to team manager on the day Craig Lee.
